Action in favor of the Saint-Joseph Moscati hospital in Yamoussoukro

On March 5, 2014, Knight René Muller, Commander of the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint Gabriel, traveled to the political capital of Côte d’Ivoire, Yamoussoukro, to meet with the leadership of Saint-Joseph Moscati Hospital at the request of the Grand Master of the Order, SEM Roland de Boutechoux de Chavanes, Consul of Côte d’Ivoire in RHÔNE-ALPES. Responsible for the Mother-Child Project at this institution, he is in charge of developing exchanges between our two institutions. Saint-Joseph Moscati Hospital is an enclave of the Vatican, located just a few hundred meters from the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, the largest Catholic religious building in the world, whose appearance is reminiscent of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The Basilica was inaugurated 20 years ago by Pope John Paul II. René Muller carried a message from the Grand Master to Father Yvon-Serge HOUNSOU, Director of the Hospital. He was received by Father Stanyslas Skuza, Rector of the Basilica. The Mayor of Yamoussoukro, Mr. Jean Kouakou, was also present, having organized this meeting in the presence of numerous national and local journalists. The Order committed to initially financing €25,000 to cover the hospital equipment needs of the Maternity Department. A partnership agreement was signed between the Order and Saint-Joseph Hospital, which will cover a period of two years. Photos

Inauguration of the Mother-Child Wing at Saint-Joseph Moscati Hospital in Yamoussoukro

On February 21, 2015, a delegation of the Order of Saint Gabriel, composed of the Grand Master of the Order, H.E. Roland Roux de Chavanes, Consul of Côte d’Ivoire, the Legate of the Order in West Africa, Consul of Côte d’Ivoire, H.E. Gaston Brun, and the special envoy of the Swiss chapter, Knight Anthony Béal, was received by Father Serge Honzu, Director of the hospital. Father Honzu was accompanied by the medical staff and hospital services. The delegation was able to observe significant achievements: fully equipped operating rooms with the most modern equipment, delivery rooms with all technical services necessary for safe childbirth, radiology and CT scan rooms, etc. The Mayor wished to honor and thank the Consul of Côte d’Ivoire, H.E. Roland Roux de Chavanes, for his constant commitment over many years in favor of Mother and Child. He recalled the donations of equipment, buses, ambulances, and medical supplies provided to Yamoussoukro and its neighboring dispensaries. The reception concluded with the surprise of the day: the inauguration of Roland Roux de Chavanes Avenue in one of the city’s upscale neighborhoods. Roland Roux de Chavanes, deeply moved, thanked on his own behalf, on behalf of his family present, and on behalf of the Order of Saint Gabriel, the city and state authorities present at this beautiful ceremony. All of this has been implemented since the Grand Master’s last visit two years ago, at which time a partnership protocol was signed between the hospital and the Order of Saint Gabriel. The hospital will soon be inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, His Excellency Mr. Alassane Ouattara. In June 2015, the Order of Saint Gabriel presented Father Honzu in Lyon with a sum of €20,000, which allowed the financing of delivery rooms, the purchase of beds and mattresses, a colposcope, and 2 ambulances. After a welcome speech, Father Honzu organized a tour of the facilities. The Grand Master and his delegation were able to have long discussions with the hospital staff, who provided them with an exceptional welcome, as only Africans, and especially Ivorians, know how to do.   The visit concluded with the inauguration of the Mother-Child Wing, and the surprise discovery of the marble plaque bearing the coat of arms of the Order of Saint Gabriel, commemorating the Order’s continuous efforts in its favor. The Mother-Child Wing of the hospital has been called since February 21: “Saint Gabriel Mother-Child Wing.” Grand Master H.E. Roland Roux de Chavanes thanked Father Honzu for this thoughtful gesture and congratulated him and all the staff for the quality of their work and the beauty of this hospital, which will be able to meet the needs of the sub-region if necessary. The hospital currently employs about a hundred people (doctors and hospital services). However, it still lacks doctors. Measures will be taken upon the delegation’s return to France to plan the temporary and voluntary deployment of doctors and nurses to Yamoussoukro. Members of the Order, who are medical professionals, will be invited to contribute to the realization of this project. Following the hospital visit, the Mayor of Yamoussoukro, Jean Kouakou, and his municipal council organized a reception befitting the welcome reserved for dignitaries at the town hall, in the presence of the Prefect, customary chiefs, and political and military personalities of the region. Medical Mission – Saint Joseph Moscati Catholic Hospital in Yamoussokro – Ivory Coast

From July 20 to 25, 2018 Led by Doctor Bruno Schaffner, Commander of the Hospitallers of France, and Doctor Bernard Pincemaille, Hospitaller Knight of the Order of Saint Gabriel For the third time, our medical team went to Côte d’Ivoire to assess the status of Saint Joseph Hospital in Yamoussoukro. The visit made it possible to determine the needs of this entity, with which the Order of Saint Gabriel has a partnership agreement. CONCLUSIONS: MOTHER-CHILD UNIT: In the process of being organized RADIOLOGY UNIT: A number of weaknesses are observed, notably regarding the use of existing high-quality equipment. There is also a critical shortage of competent and available radiologists. Communication and organization of the reception need to be improved. A – Lack of Staff Training: At almost all positions – practical, effective internships should be considered and implemented. B – Critical lack of patients in general, despite the FAVORABLE environment and the regional population. • Rapid reactivation of EMERGENCIES and the MOTHER-CHILD unit. • Effective activation of the RADIOLOGY-SCANNER + MRI unit. • Full-time, competent doctors. KEY POINTS FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT: • MEDICAL IMAGING – ESSENTIAL UNIT – generates significant revenue for the Hospital. • Implementation of precise protocols according to pathology – optimize skills: Radiologists – Technicians – Effective patient preparation (if injection needed). • Rapid interpretation leading to timely and properly conducted treatment. • Develop the RENAL DIALYSIS unit – also essential for hospital revenue – INDISPENSABLE. • The MOTHER-CHILD unit must be rapidly developed. • The SURGICAL unit requires better organization to allow greater efficiency. Here too: TRAINING and protocols – Implementation of advanced techniques – epidurals – blocks – upper and lower limbs. TO ACHIEVE THIS, WE PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING SOLUTIONS: In agreement with Dr. JP PICHON ENT Develop an advanced consultation system around Yamoussoukro – in the villages – on-site in the most representative areas of the population, in pediatrics – ENT – dermatology – gynecology, using adapted mobile units – minibus or bus within a 20/25 km radius around Yamoussoukro at first, in agreement with the Government, allowing on-site triage and then referral of patients to Moscati for specialized care. Train Moscati personnel – on-site – EPU – intervention protocols – sending specialized personnel – Radiology Technicians – Anesthesia – ICU – Renal Dialysis – ENT – Ophthalmology – fully prepared to intervene under the supervision of the medical team of the Order of Saint Gabriel. The trained personnel will then train their colleagues (specialized nurses and others). Practical internships could include Video participation + Colloquia – On-site Q&A. HEREFORE: Initially, these are the solutions we propose to engage Moscati Hospital, which presents many advantages to actively develop and thus achieve quality outreach in the region and beyond, given its location between Abidjan and Burkina Faso. Sent to Côte d’Ivoire by the Grand Master of the Order of Saint Gabriel, H.E. Roland de Boutechoux de Chavanes, and in agreement with the Constable of the Order, H.E. This mission was led by Doctor Bruno Schaffner (Radiologist, Oncologist), Commander of the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint Gabriel in France. He was accompanied by Doctors Jean Pierre Pichon (ENT) and Bernard Pincemaille (Anesthetist-ICU), both Hospitaller knights. They were received by Father Jean de Dieu Bellembaongo at Yamoussoukro Hospital to carry out advanced consultations in villages near the country’s capital. The Mayor of Yamoussoukro, Jean Kouakou (Photo), was actively involved in this medical project. Our team visited the following six villages: DJAHAKRO – GPANGBASSOU – DJAMALABO – BONZI – NANAN – MOREFE in the BAOULE region, with the agreement of the village chiefs, who welcomed the Medical Team at the end of the consultations with a lunch offered by the village. A few MOSCATI doctors accompanied our teams during these special days, though the team felt there were too few, especially in pediatrics and gynecology-obstetrics. The team of the Order of Saint Gabriel also included the Regional Directors of Local Health, Dr. KARAMOKO Jean-Claude and TOURE, with whom they formed friendly relations expected to strengthen during future missions. They were REMARKABLY welcomed by the population, unaccustomed to receiving doctors from the Order of Saint Gabriel at their doorsteps in the villages and at their free disposal. They were ATTENTIVELY received by the Regional Health Directors, very interested in this form of cooperation for the benefit of the populations. They were also PASSIONATELY received by the Village Chiefs and Political Authorities, delighted to see that the “White” doctors of the Order of Saint Gabriel traveled at no cost to serve the needy population, as noted by the Mayor of the city, Jean Kouakou. [sp_wpcarousel id=”941″] Au cours du séjours des médecins c’est plus de 700 personnes qui ont été soignées dans l’ensemble des villages visités During the doctors’ stay, more than 700 people were treated across all visited villages Nos médecins ont constaté un manque cruel de moyens (notamment au niveau des dispensaires quand ils existent) matériels (lits hospitalisation – couveuses – mat médical de 1ère nécessité etc. Our doctors observed a severe lack of resources (especially at dispensaries, when they exist), equipment (hospital beds, incubators, essential medical materials, etc.). Commander Schaffner must explore the possibilities of providing this type of equipment. The conferences held within the framework of MOSCATI – ENT – Emergencies – use of Medical Imaging for examinations – were attended by many MOSCATI doctors (but seemingly poorly understood in practical terms) and require on-site deployment of skilled personnel with hospital experience: (radiology technicians, anesthetists, specialized pediatric and neonatal nurses). Président de la commission des dons et le Grand-Maître Roland de Boutechoux de Chavanes This issue will be discussed with the Constable of the Order, Ambassador Jürg Staübli, President of the Donation Commission, and the Grand Master Roland de Boutechoux de Chavanes.
